Review: Divje Sime

When one young band in short period of time of two years, releases two albums, it's either word about bend which create music just with aim to publish their own music as quickly as possible, without taking care of quality of that music, or it's word about band which has enormous confidence after successfully first album, and is able to transform that confidence into creativity and inspiration and thus create enough material for new album. If we need to sort band Mjesni Odbor in one of these groups, it will certainly be the second one. After excellent acceptance of songs like Mande Mande and Di si sinoc, bend gain will and energy for creating more similar music which found it's place on album Divje Sime. This band from Dalmacija, was founded in 2009, and is consisted of six members: Siniša Garbin (bass, vocal) , Stipe Jakovčević (harmonic, keyboard) , Luka Domačina(drums), Andrej Burica(guitar), Jure Grgantov Grg (trumpet 1) , Hrvoje Biliškov(trumpet 2).

It's already great success for this young group of people that they are still together after four years, and this album is prove that they are going to stay together for a long incoming period. Also, it took great courage to publish once again music in CD format, especially at the time when that sort of publishing is totally neglected and is losing it's meaning. Their music is not changed a lot, comparing to first album. They haven't gone for some experimenting, and they kept theirs Disco Cuba style, amplifying funk and rock influences. The atmosphere album make is quite mediterranean, emphasizing hedonism, bohemian style of life, wine (Karantil), women – shortly: enjoying in sensual pleasure. Apart from these themes, songs about love (Di je ljubav nestala, A tebe nima), and odes to the girls passion (Natalia, Sonja, Sonja) aren't left out. What was left out are cover riffs and melodies from famous blockbusters, which were rather frequent on the first album. Most of the songs are in fast Ska rhythm, which is defined by bra section, which leads dance flow and make their songs fantastic summer hits, which are going to be more than welcome on theirs shows. There are some slow songs, also. Slow songs in style of rock ballads like Zima and Baii, in which keyboards and guitar also have big role with solos which make space for more improvisation and creativity. It's often heard in their songs crossovers from Ska to Reggae rhythm, which shows that band is much more secure and comfortable with this kind of genres and know how to control them. This control and improvement is felt very strong in songs like: Vidimo se sljedecega lita, Baii, Natalia, Uje...

Band is trying to make it clear where they are coming from, they are not running away from theirs roots, what is emphasized by singing in native dialect, using a lot of various instruments such as harmonica, and adding murmur and atmosphere from pubs, making it possible to feel the atmosphere and culture of area in which they live. Those are all important details which make this band original, and genuine. Mjesni Odbor is one of those band which are on the right musical way, but that's not something they should take for granted, it's only them who decide where their talent will finish, and in which way it's going to develop.
